Furman University will host the South Atlantic Regional Mock Trial Tournament, Friday-Saturday, 01-02 February, 2008. The tournament is sanctioned by the American Mock Trial Association, which sponsors competitions for undergraduate students throughout the nation. Nearly 350 students (including those from South Carolina-Columbia, South Carolina-Upstate, Bob Jones, Furman, College of Charleston, and the Citadel) will vie for bids to the national championship and national consolation tournaments. The 2008 tournament will be staged on Furman’s campus as well as in the county, municipal, and federal courthouses in downtown Greenville. The courthouse venues add a “real-life” dimension to the trials and better prepare students for post-regional competition. This year’s case, State of Midlands v. Bobbi Campbell, takes a novel form: it is the sentencing phase of a criminal proceeding. Campbell has pled guilty to Assault in the Second Degree for stabbing Dawn Francis, a social worker, with an HIV-infected needle when Francis attempted to remove Campbell’s small child from the home. The sentencing range is 5-30 years.
Professor Glen Halva-Neubauer of Furman University is the tournament host. To run this tournament successfully, 288 judge slots must be filled (that’s not a typo!). Halva-Neubauer, therefore, seeks the assistance of all South Carolina Bar members to serve as judges for this event.
The tournament is divided into four trials: Friday, the 1st from 12:30-4:30 PM; Friday, the 1st, from 5:30-9:30 PM; Saturday, the 2nd from 8:00 AM-NOON; and Saturday, the 2nd, from 1:00-5:00 PM. Dinner will be provided on Friday evening, and lunch will be served on Saturday noon.
This tournament is being presented by the South Carolina Bar Foundation.
