Results from South Beach Invitational

Friends of Furman Mock Trial:

Good evening.  I am delighted to report that the mock trial Paladins had a great weekend in Miami at the South Beach Invitational Tournament.  This tournament had a small field of 12 teams, but they were all representatives of programs that typically qualify for the championship finals.  Furman fielded two teams at the South Beach, and we finished in 3rd and 4th places.

Meredith Dempsey, a senior Classics major from Lexington, was awarded an outstanding attorney award.

Our third place team finished with a record of 7-5.  The team lost three ballots to UCLA A (the tournament champion), won three ballots against the University of Pittsburgh and the Univeristy of Miami, and won one ballot and lost two ballots against Northwestern (the tournament runner-up).

The fourth place team also finished with a record of 7-5.  The team won two ballots and lost one ballot against UCLA B, won two ballots and lose one ballot against the University of Miami, won two ballots and lost one ballot against California-Berkeley, and won one ballot and lost two ballots against the University of Texas.

Dempsey and Will Gyauch '10, Lexington, SC serve as captains of our 3rd place team.  They were joined by:

Brice Cantrell '11, Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Jan Lukas '10, Berlin, Maryland
Latasia Fields '10, Charlotte, North Carolina
Katherine Myers '10, Columbia, South Carolina
Emily Westberry '11, Watkinsville, Georgia
Elizabeth Stell '10, Fayetteville, Georgia

Allison Heldreth '10, Summerville, SC, and Morgan Bridgman '12, Amsterdam, Netherlands lead our 4th place team.   They were joined by:

Ameer Armaly '11, Greenville, South Carolina
Mattson Smith '13, Tega Cay, South Carolina
Adam Lalor '13, Nashville, South Carolina
Kathleen Wade '12, Tallahassee, Florida
Kenny Palmer '13, Lake City, South Carolina
Sarah Jennings '12, Littleton, Colorado

The team is coached by D. Brad Rustin '03, Steven Buckingham '03, Ashleigh Ward '03, Mark Fessler '05, Dawn Williams '05, Libby Weith '06, Dr. Margaret Oakes (English Department), Jessica Rustin, and Titus Nichols.  They are an outstanding staff.

The invitational season for 09-10 is now over, and tomorrow I leave for Chapel Hill with our third and fourth teams; those teams will be competing in the Southeastern Regional Tournament.  The top eight teams at that tournament will advance to the tournament in Greenville in late March.  Our teams that competed in Miami last weekend are entered in the Orlando, Florida, regional tournament in two weeks.

Thanks for your suppot of our mock trial program.

Ciao,
Glen
